Is Rocket League Cross-Platform? How to Play it?

Rocket League is an exciting and fun free-to-play game that is perfect for playing with friends. Several players enjoy the competitive aspect of vehicular soccer, whereas others just enjoy messing around with their teammates.

Rocket League supports cross-platform play by default, so players can play with their friends across any platform. However, if the cross-platform functionality was accidentally disabled, it is easy to reactivate it.

The Rocket League game supports cross-platform play on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo 3DS. The game is also available on consoles through Steam or the Epic Games store for PC players.

Rocket League cannot be played with a friend on a different console or platform unless cross-platform play is enabled in the menu. Navigate to the Settings menu by launching Rocket League and clicking on the Main Menu.

Check the Cross-Platform Playbox under the Gameplay tab once you find the settings page. Online matches will be randomly matched with other platforms in order to enable crossplay across all platforms.

With other platforms and private lobbies, players can match up with their friends for public matches. Join a private lobby with friends by selecting Play from the Main Menu, then Private Match, and either creating or joining a lobby. You can invite friends from any platform.

How to crossplay in Rocket League?

Rocket League players have been asking questions like “how to crossplay in Rocket League”. It is one of the most frequently asked questions in the gaming community. On Rocket League’s official website, you can find the answer to this question. There are steps that you need to follow to enable crossplatform play. Rocket League should already have cross-platform play enabled. In case you are still having trouble figuring it out, we have you covered. Below are the steps to enable crossplay in Rocket League.

  • In Rocket League, go to the Main Menu
  • Choose Options
  • Open the Gameplay tab
  • Check if the Cross-Platform Playbox is active or not

Since Rocket League was released on the Epic Games Store, it has been officially announced as a free game. Compared to previous updates, this updated version will also feature cross-platform play. The game will no longer be available on Steam after this date. Updates and fixes will be regularly available to Steam users who have already purchased the game. Additionally, they have favored players who already had the game installed by charging them. They have already given them some advantages like:

  • Before free-to-play, Rocket League-branded DLC was released
  • “Est. 20XX” title. It displays the year when a player first began playing Rocket League, which will be helpful
  • once 200+ Common items have been upgraded to “Legacy” quality
  • Golden Cosmos Boost
  • Dieci-Oro Wheels
  • Huntress Player Banner

Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 4 were the first platforms Rocket League was released on. 505 Games began distributing the physical retail version of the game for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in June 2016. It was announced in 2017 that Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment had taken over the distribution responsibilities.

The game was released on macOS and Linux for the first time in 2016. Since then, the game has become one of the most played games around the world. A number of awards have also been won by the game, including the British Academy Games Award for Multiplayer, BAFTA Games Award for Evolving Game, and The Game Award for Best Sports/Racing Game.

Rocket League cross-play limitations

Crossplay is fully supported in Rocket League, at least when it comes to gameplay. There are, however, some differences between the console versions. Armadillo and Hogsticker are exclusive to Xbox One, while Sweet Tooth is exclusive to PlayStation 4. In the case of the Armadillo and Hogsticker, PC players will see them as the Octane. In the same way, PC players will see the Sweet Tooth as the Merc.

Chat is another limitation, unfortunately. Voice and typed chat in-game do not work across platforms. Psyonix supports Quick Chat across platforms, so you can send quick messages to your teammates.

Other limitations appear in the form of trading. It is not possible to send items between platforms. Within a platform, however, you can trade.

How will Trading Change with Rocket League Cross-Platform?

We will be making some easy changes to trading to make it easier for players to trade across platforms. However, some items are not available for trading across platforms.

If both players are signed in to the same platform, tradeable items can be exchanged between them. As an example, if you unlocked the Draco wheels on PC, and you wanted to trade with someone on Xbox, with the Heatwave decal they unlocked on PC, this is fine, as long as you are signed in to your Xbox accounts when you complete the trade.

The ability to trade physically purchased items across platforms will not be available. If you purchase an item through the store or build an item through credits, these items can only be traded from the platform they were purchased on.

Rocket League requires new players to purchase 500 credits before they can trade. Existing players are exempt from this requirement.

Rocket League cross-progression and cross-save

Psyonix is adding cross-platform progression along with Rocket League’s free-to-play transition later this year. The game will also be available exclusively on the Epic Games Store on PC, although Psyonix plans to continue to support Steam. All your progress will be carried over between platforms, no matter where you are. You can track your progress by looking at items, your competitive rank, and your Rocket Pass rank. Like Fortnite, everything will go through your Epic Games account, so the change should be seamless.

We don’t know when the update will be released, though. At the moment, Rocket League does not support cross-progression or cross-saving. The update, according to Psyonix, will be coming “later this summer.” With only a few weeks left in the season, we should see something soon.
